It's Aliiive!

I’m sure you all are just thrilled to hear that we are now back online. After successfully moving over a week ago, we just today got around to figuring out the internet problems… anyway. This means we are officially moved in!

I am loving the new apartment. We have much more room, a much bigger kitchen, a miniature table-top dishwasher, a separate bedroom, lots of closet space.... What's not to love?
Little dude is alive and well and has some VERY active moments. Boyfriend has now officially felt kicks and I've even seen them from the outside a few times. It's not that I can see elbows or feet, but I just see my belly moving. Sometimes the kicks are so perfectly timed that I've been starting to wonder if he's having hiccups!
Will post pictures later/another day. The apartment still seems to be a bit messy most of the time as we find permanent homes for all of our stuff. I also have some belly pictures but I am too lazy to transfer them over right now – I am eager to go outside into the sunshine, go for a little walk, and maybe get some ice cream.

Flashback Thursday

There's this cool thing on Blogger called "planned posts" - which essentially means that you can write a post and then choose when you want it to be published. So you're reading this thursday, when I actually prepared it on tuesday. Cool, right?

Anyway, we're probably busy moving all of our junk, but I wanted to reminisce a bit with you all. Today, I'm looking back almost exactly 2 years and showing you a few select pictures from what I fondly like to think of as "Graduation Road Trip 2009"

Boone Hall Plantation near Charleston SC.
If you feel like you've seen it before, it was used (among others)
for filming of the series "North and South" and for the film "The Notebook"

Beautiful Charleston SC.
I would go back in a heartbeat, we didn't spend nearly enough time here.

Just as beautiful and interesting: Savannah, Georgia.

Life

On monday morning we lugged the first 16 boxes out of storage and into our apartment to start packing for the next big move. (By the way, if the updates are slow the next week, it's probably because of missing internet - I'm not sure what the internet situation will be like the next week or so).

Tomorrow afternoon we pick up our keys,
Thursday we move all our stuff,
Friday my father-in-law (actually, very much out of law, but you understand the concept...) is coming to help with some lamps and other handy-man stuff.

I despise packing and moving. Don't get me wrong, I am very excited for the end result: finally having some more space, having all of our stuff, getting ready for little dude, decorating...... But the actual packing and moving process is just a pain. Right now our stuff is in boxes and we are living in pretty much a disaster area.

On the upside, the weather is fantastic and we are enjoying the sunshine. Yesterday we grilled for the first time of the season with a few of my girlfriends, enjoying a mixed grill (spicy sausage, BBQ chicken, and steak), salad, and two types of 'tatersalad.

Life is good. See you on the other side of Easter!

J Crew - Pink Nails

Apparently there has been a whole lot of hoopla about a J.Crew ad featuring a mother and her adorable sun sharing a very happy moment.

courtesy J.Crew

Oh yeah, also the kid has pink toenails, which apparently means that J Crew is sending out "Gender Propaganda" (said here, among other places).

Maybe I'm just a raging crazy feminist, but excuse me, I'm not sure I understand the big deal here?
Pink toenails on a young boy (5 years old) = confusing his gender, making him homosexual/transgendered, Apparently?

First of all, let me clarify something here. Gender, by definition, is the social construction of ones sex, based on stereotypes, and cultural and historical context. Sex, refers to the biological differences between male and female. If you have ever studied history, anthropology, or sociology (especially if you have studied it in a gender or women's studies perspective) you wll have learned that gender roles have been different throughout cultures and history.

Ok, now that that's out of the way: So a 5 year old boy likes the color pink. He's seen his mother paint her nails. It seems very natural to me that he would want to try it. Maybe he really does like the color pink (the ad does claim that the boy (who is in fact the son of someone at J. Crew) loves the color pink). Again, why shouldn't he like the color pink? To me, it is refreshing that he hasn't already been exposed to so many gender stereotypes that he despises the color pink or has a problem with nailpolish. Really, his fondness for pink is much more natural than any Gender stereotype regarding colors (remember here that gender is something that is socially constructed, and really not natural at all).

Do colors and (what I will decide to call harmless) childs play really determine a persons future gender, future sexual preference, or sense of identity with a certain gender? I say no.

Growing up, my favorite color was blue. I painted my walls blue, had a blue backpack, wore blue clothes. Also, I played with legos. I had a race-car set of legos with the actual race-track. I loved playing with my sisters train set. I was also much more of an athlete than a girly girl. Still, I would say that I am very much a girl, not confused about my gender (or my sex), and also I am heterosexual. Not that it would make me any less of a good person if I weren't any of the above. The only point is that there is no causal link between so-called "girly habits" (or "boyish habits") and sexual/gendered confusion.

Out of the many criticisms I have read of this ad, I will only agree with one: the fact that perhaps, socially, the pink nails (and similar activities) is likely to set a boy up for a hard time in the future. It's a shame, really. If my son came to me and wanted to paint his toenails pink, I would let him. And then I would probably pray long and hard that some little brat won't tease him for being a "wuss" or a "girl" for having pink toenails. We should feel bad for the little brat, because he's been taught such rigid gender roles and stereotypes that he will probably miss out on alot of fun experiences and wonderful people in his life.

I'm an Auntie!

Since I expect my own sister to make me wait several years to become a "real aunt" (you better be waiting several years!) I have very willingly adopted the title of Aunt to my boyfriends little niece. This week, we became the proud Uncle and Aunt to another beautiful little girl!

We're very excited to meet little "K" this today and to see little "I" in the role of big sister. And we're even more excited to see them both in the role of cousins to our own little dude come late summer (although they actually have cousins on their mothers side as well).

Mah Belly! - 21 Weeks

I'm growing bigger by the week, even if it's not clear in pictures, it's definately clear in real life. I am now up 3 kg from what I am assuming is my pre-pregnancy weight. The goal is a max of 10 kg gain. It seems reachable.

Saggy sweatpants butt

this picture is very bright.

My only comfort is the fact that I can still swim faster than my boyfriend! I'm afraid it's only a short-lived comfort thought, for as I grow fatter, he is getting in better shape. Perhaps I should starting teaching him some bad crawl techniques in order to keep my leading position?? hmmm, something to ponder....

The sex thing....

I like to think that I don't have alot of the stereotypical "girly" traits. I've never been one to wear excessive makeup, dress exclusively in pink, glitter, and dresses, just as I've always tried to distance myself from drama and gossip. As kids, we played with barbies, legos, dressup, kitchens, and animals.

I am also a firm believer that many gender stereotypes are taught - they are socially learned. We'll never know just how much is social and how much biology - but in my mind, alot of emphasis is on the environment.

So I've always known that I would raise my own girls to be independent and smart. To teach them that "they can do anything boys can do." For some reason, I've never thought about how to raise boys - but of course, boys bring challenges of their very own! Boys "can do anything girls can do" (except maybe bear children and breastfeed...).

But why do we insist on gendering children before they are even born? We've been so excited to find out the sex of our baby - it makes name picking and equipment shopping a whole lot easier. But why, really?  I don't plan on having a baby blue nursery (in fact, we won't even have a real nursery). I don't plan on dressing our boy in exclusively blue and green. I hope that we can avoid an excessive theme of cars, tractors, and tools.

When I told my boyfriend this, he kind of rolled my eyes at me. I think he understoon my point, but a man probably always wants his "little boy to grow into a real man". But why should we be shoving monstertrucks and toolkits in our childs face? Won't he grow up to be a real man without airplanes and tractors? And what is, in fact, a real man?

Isn't a real man someone who has respect for other people (men and women and children)? Who works hard, loves his family, and fights for his passions?

And if so, what is the real difference between a real man and a real woman?

Royal Christening

I'm sitting here today with my book, my tea, my knitting project, and watching all the hoopla surrounding the big event of the day: The royal christening of the newborn royal twins.

I'm a little bit of a royalist. I love following the royal family. I think perhaps some of it stems from spending so many years abroad; it just makes following all things Danish so much more special and fun. In 2004, I got to take the day off school (a mental health day..) and all the Danes in the area got together for a wedding-viewing party. We dressed up, had delicious brunch, and watched the wedding on a big projector screen. My favorite part of watching royal events on TV is watching the arrivals on the red carpet and looking at all the fancy dresses and outfits (Kind of like at the Oscars).

Plus, you know, Babies!! Awwww, so cute.

People seem to have alot of varying opinions on the Royal Family and royalty in general. Alot of the arguments are valid enough - like that they use tax money that could be used elsewhere in society or the "why are they so special, their just people like you and me" argument.

To take my academic glasses on for a minute though, I have to pinpoint that it is incredibly difficult to actually figure out the value that they create for Denmark. They function as ambassadors, and personally I think they do a good job and I am proud to have them represent this country. They sell a whole lot of magazines, generate tourism, etc.

And just to get my name guesses/bets/suggestions in writing: I'm thinking Viktor for a boy, and Caroline (Mathilde?) for the girl.

It's a.....

Yesterday we had our (most likely) last ultrasound. A very nice nurse/widwife spent about 15 minutes scanning my belly and my baby all the way through. She checked and measured the size of the head, the size of the belly, and the length of the thighbone. She checked all the chambers of the heart, checked for two kidneys, and checked the stomach and the bladder. We saw little hands with fingers and little feet with toes.

Since she evaluated that there was "no suspicison of anything wrong" we most likely will not being seeing our little dude again untill arrival at some point in August/September.

Of course, one of the main reasons for suspense yesterday was our hope to find out the sex of our baby. When we asked the nurse, she very willingly wanted to check for us, but little dude was laying so it was difficult. Little dude also had the umbilical cord betweens its legs.... We were instantly a little dissapointed, because we had really been looking forward to finding out!

....But she jiggled me a little and tried to scan from the other side, and suddenly she exclaimed "Oh, no, there it is. I think this looks like a little boy!" And from then on, it was PRETTY obvious that it was, indeed, a little DUDE hiding in my belly. We could all see it, and he was proudly showing of all of his... well, equipment.

She was so sure that she said "Well, either it's that, or it's an extra leg..."

So yesterday and today we (or at least, I) have been all high and excited. We would have been excited either way, boy or girl. But it just makes everything seem so much more real. Now we can start picking out names for real (I already have a favorite...) and start preparing for a boy in a very gendered world.

We went out to dinner to celebrate the exciting day had had delicious steaks. We very rarely eat out so this was a very special treat.

Aftre the ultrasound we had a short consult with a doctor, who also evaluated that there was nothign wrong, no needs for any concern, etc. We looked at some of the measurements of our little guy, and have come to the conclusion that he will look a whole lot like his Daddy. His head was slightly larger than average, his belly slightly smaller than average, his weight slightly under average, but his legs were slightly longer than average.... So I am thinking a skinny, long-legged/tall little boy? Hopefully he will be blonde with curly hair and big ole blue eyes..... ;P

It's a birthday-like celebration!
How to celebrate 100 posts?
Well, I'm going to go back through some of my favorite posts of blog-life past....
.... because I'm narcisistic like that....

Back in high school, in the xanga days, I had an everyday-life blog. After starting College I deleted that blog - something I still regret to this day. Mostly because it would have been interesting to read back about what I was doing back then.

This blog started out as just a place for me to dump some stories and writings. Some of those things have since been deleted. It didn't really a create a life of its own until I moved back to Denmark in August of 2009. The original intent was to post pictures and stories from my new life abroad. The first many posts were sporadic and random....

I wrote some posts about cultural differences and observations, like this one on being culturaly illiterate.
I wrote about humor, laughter, and Audrey Hepburn as well as a post about life as a student.

In August of 20100 (on my birthday, actually), my friend Erin got engaged to Matt. I interned at Danfoss and wrote about my love and fascination for communication, and about how I wanted to be a popular blogger who gets free stuff from campaigns.

I wrote about my little sister and my goal in life of becoming a lifestyle expert.

In 2011, the blog turned into much more of an everyday/lifestyle/ blog with a main focus on pregnancy and a little bit of food-related nonsense.

What will happen next? Stay tuned to find out....

Movie Review "Superclasico"

On friday night we finally made our way to the movie theater to see the Danish movie "Superclasico." I am a member of Biografklub Danmark (a 'club' where you pay a small membership fee and then get half price tickets for a selection of movies), and boy had a voucher for a free movie that he recieved for taking a survey at the mall a few weeks ago (a market study survey that included him tasting and evaluating samples of Somersby Alcoholic Apple cider... ).

At the end of the day, we spent 40 dkk for a night out at the movies. Considering the amount of money, it was totally worth it... if I had spent more money I may not have been as happy when I left the theater.

courtesy of  www.kino.dk/Film/S/SU/SuperClasico.aspx

The movie plot was somewhat predictable, and it was set up to be somewhat humoristic/sarcastic/dark humor, but it was at the same time very sad. Christian (Anders Bertelsen) has been left by his wife, Anna (Paprika Steen). He is now along with his 15 year old son and a wine shop that is going out of business. Anna has run off to Buenos Aires and is having a very open affair with a famous Soccer player. She wants a divorce, he is still in love with her, so he packs up his kid and travels to Buenos Aires to win back his wife....

..... hilarity, awkwardness, sex, soccer, and too much wine drinking ensues....

The entire movie was narrated (Mikael Bertelsen), which was odd but I personally thought it worked well to decribe some details of the movie, and at the same time worked well with the tone of the movie (very dry, Danish humor). The film was shot almost (or entirely?) entirely in Argentina, with some really beautiful shots of Buenos Aires. There were some amusing side characters and several small stories and details that really completed the movie. At the same time, here were also some details and characters that were just downright wierd.

Still, in my opinion,  many of the characters were not very well developed over the movie, and the movie seemed to be confused as to whether it was comedy, a drama, a romantic dramedy... or something entirely different.

I would recommend that you see this movie, because it entertained me for 2 hours.... but I would also recommend that you wait until it's out on DVD (or until it premiers on television).

Excuse the baby spamming today! I'm not gonna lie, babies and pregnancy and all things related are occupying my brain. They've set up tents and it looks like their planning to stay for a while. Pregnancy brain already? Possibly. But it's just such a life-changing event in my (our) lives that it's probably very natural that it takes over almost every aspect of my thoughts.

Two days ago I finished my first real knitting project

The above little blanket was a learning project, and so it is full of small mistakes. I've gotten alot more comfortable with the needles, with changing yarn and colors, and with "purling" (excuse my poor english knitting vocabulary. "At strikke vrang")

I have now started my second knitting project. It is another blanket, but this time following a pattern from here. It's called a "sunny baby blanket" and it's technically supposed to be yellow. You can google your way to more recipes and pictures of the blanket. It seems like an appropriate difficulty level.

I chose to knit in blue. The lighting is making is look much more light/baby blueish. In real life, it is a darker and more turquoise-ey

My cousin bought me baby clothes in Thailand that she sent me pictures of:

Cute stuff right? I have a feeling this will be one spoiled baby!

Anyway, we are currently very anxiously and not so patiently awaiting Tuesday and our next ultrasound scan. Tuesday will hopefully be the day we find out the sex of little dude(ette).

Tonight is date night for no reason other than "we feel like it." We (I) cook dinner and eat together most nights, but tonight we are making homemade burgers with guacamole and homebaked buns, and then we are going to the movies to see "Superclasico" - a Danish movie that is supposed to be quite entertaining.

Mah Belly! 20 weeks

Today marks the "halfway point" to my due date. For some reason, I've been waiting for this day for a while... It's not like anything special happens during this week of pregnancy, but halfway.... Wow.

So far everything has seemed to go by so slow, but now, thinking back - Christmas eve and those two positive pregnancy tests - that was just a few days ago, right?

I try to remind myself everyday to enjoy it, to be patient, to enjoy the quiet times and the sleep, to take advantage of being spontaneous. However, everything seems to be going by so slowly. Until days like today, where looking back reminds me that the world is just flying by while I'm sitting here waiting for the arrival of a tiny miracle.

hey big mama

I'm showing two pictures today to show the huge size difference between the two.... not sure if it's the light, the angle, or maybe I accidentally popped the belly out in the top one. Either way, there's not way out of it now, this belly is growing by the week...

Flashback Thursday - April 2006

Let's go back - back to the year 2006.

Remember when...
.... We went to Tigerfest at Towson?

Back when Tigerfest was free for all students (how did us non TU kids get in..?)... We sneaked liquids onto the field in waterbottles... hidden down the shirts of certain people... Someone fell asleep on the field during the main act....We guzzled down cookies and french fries and chicken fingers for dinner from the diner.... hangover food of champions...

Featuring Yellowcard and Mae
We pregamed at the home of Erin and Stacy

This picture used to be upside down....
It's so easy a caveman could do it...
Feel the love?
And then suddenly.....

Megan was preggo!!! We are still (impatiently) awaiting the arrival of this little miracle child.

Crazy Viral Videos.

Those twins I blogged about last week?

Here I thought I was blogging something unique.... turns out that since then, they've made the news worldwide and the video has gone viral. Would you believe that even my little tiny blog got hits from people searching google for the talking twins?

On the Danish newspaper- website JP, they show a link to the video as well as an article with the headline "talking babies attracts millions". They appeared, along with their mom, on Good Morning America. The examiner mentions the twins, as does accesshollywood, ABC news, the Ellen Show, CBS news, Fox news..... etc.

The Ellen Show decided to translate the video:

Remember some other videos of the past that have gone viral?

Tuesday Morning

As usual, I have quite a day ahead of me...

It started out with fresh coffee and chocolate milk.... Breakfast of champions (accompanied by toast and jam)

Then, I prepared another round of dough for the fridge...

... I'm already looking forward to fresh bread tomorrow morning. (This time I only made a half-portion of this recipe.)

Now, getting ready to go grocery shopping as well as take care of some vacation money/tax issues. Also, I need to vacuum after a small spice cabinet accident last night.....

Spring finally sprang in our little kingdom this past weekend, as temperatures soared into the high 60's - and may or may not have hit 70 F!

This means that I took my first outing in little ballerina flats.

My old, ancient, leopard print ballerina flats, but still.... flats and leggings, this means spring has officially arrived.

Notice also that I am sporting my new spring/fall/between seasons coat. Courtesy of H&M mama collection, but since it has a waist belt I'm thinking I can sport it even when non-preggo. Either way, it should work all spring/summer and well into fall. Totally worth the dkk 175-

P.S. I can't see my feet

Good food, Good Grub, Good God, Let's eat!

Just to keep going on the food-kick, I thought I would review the Dinner we made on friday night for our company...

We had a busy weekend of cooking and preparations....

putting away groceries....
... since we had a couples dinner friday evening and a big Brunch Saturday morning.

For Friday, this is how our menu ended up looking...

Appetite teaser:
Bruschetta on toasted baguette
  • 2 Ripe tomatoes finely chopped, one onion, finely chopped, fresh basil finely chopped, 2 cloves of pressed garlic, 1 tbsp of EVOO.

Main Course:
Filled Turkey Breast - free from the imagination (according to recipe for pork tenderloin from boys family)
    • Make a stuffing with sundried tomatoes, fresh basil, fresh parsley, feta cheese, 1 onion, 3 cloves of garlic, and finely chopped mushrooms (about 200gr). Mix together in a small food processor.
    • Stuff the Turkey Breast and wrap the entire thing with bacon, or prosciutto.
    • Bake however long the packaging requires. Our Turkey was about 1050 gr, which means it called for about 70 minutes.
    • If you like a good gravy, add a carrot and an onion (chopped into large pieces) to the pan, along with about a cup or two of broth and a bay leaf. After cooking, bring all of this to a boil in a pan with a bit of milk/cream and perhaps a bit of white wine.
Baked new small potatoes
    • Scrubbed and baked whole in oven with salt and pepper for appr. 45 minutes.

Salad with Pears, Prosciutto, and Gorgonzola (a salad I learned from my aunt - I believe it is from the Danish recipe book Suveraene Salater?)
  • Chop a blend of lettuce, chop a tomato, finely cut an onion into very thing slices (a red onion works well)
  • 2 Pears - cut into quarters to take out the pit, and very finely dice the pear.
  • Mix all of these ingredients in a bowl
  • Fry prosciotto on pan until brown and crispy
  • Chop the bacon finely after frying, but do not mix with salad until immediately before serving.
  • I prepare bowls with pine nuts, sunflower seeds, and gorgonzola, since not everybody likes all the extra topping on their salad.
  • Drizzle with a bit of the following dressing: oil, white vine vinegar, honey, lemon juice, salt+ pepper (all to taste)

Desert was homemade ice cream, courtesy of boy. One liter of chocolate marzipan, one liter of Daim. Yum yum yum.

Somethings happening.... (Mah belly!)

Yes, this week it seems as if my belly has grown exponentially. I'm not sure if it's the angle, the shirt, or the actual size of my uterus but.... well, judge for yourselves....

Okay, the side angle may be making it look slightly larger....

Anyway, on wednesday we went to an investor meeting with the bank. We may not be the target audience for an investor meeting, but they had guest speakers from tv2news (poltical commentators/entertainers Mogensen og Kristiansen) and they had a free dinner buffet.... enough said.

While we were sitting through the first hour-long speech by the executive director regarding investments, stocks, financial politics, etc. I felt, for the first time, what I was 1000% sure was actual movement from little dude. I've felt *something* but have always been unsure whether it was a baby or whether it was gas... ahemm. This time I was really, really, sure though.

Which has led us to believe that little dude will be either a financial/economic guru or a politician. Yes. (That, or little dude was incredibly bored....)
