This past weekend the European Short Course Championships (swimming, doh) were held in Poland. As an old swimmer I tend to follow championships like these closely - I like to look up the results, stories and pictures. When Danish swimmers are mentioned in International swimming news, it makes me happy.
I've never understood why Swimming isn't a bigger sport in Denmark. In the US and Australia, swimming has become quite popular - largely thanks to superstars such as Ian Thorpe and Michael Phelps (what up Bmore!) In Denmark though, it has onyl started gaining more respect and media coverage again more recently. Super swimmer Lotte Friis gained some popularity after winning some medals and competing in the Danish version of 'Dancing with the starts" (vild med dans). But she still has to compete with the handball team, the soccer team, Caroline Wozniacki, and a plethora of other athletes for media and mainstream attention. More recently, Jeanette Ottesen has been winning and therefore recieving lots of attention. These are swimmers that swam back when I swam - they were the 'good girls' of my agegroup, the ones to beat (even though I was way far off their times even back then....) - and it is SO cool to see them have success. And even more exciting - there are lots of young talents too.
Anyway, back to the Euro SC champs. Denmark won a record amount of medals and topped the medal charts, set some cool records (It's good to see that new swimmers are taking over now that the Mette JAcobsen and Louise Ørnstedt days are over....). I KNOW none of this translates to Olympic Success. But BOY am I excited for this upcoming Olympic year!

The most marketable sportswoman?
Probably not who you think it is...
... it's our very own Danish tennis darling, little miss sunshine, Caroline Wozniacki.
Yes, in a study (completed by SportsPro) of the most marketable sportspeople in the world, Caroline placed #9, the top ranking female.
Usain Bolt was #1 and you cans see the entire list here.
I have to add that I think it is significant to note that since this is not an Olympic year, some of the rankings will probably look very very different next year. I foresee Michael Phelps (only #8 this year) (wtf?) skyrocketing even higher, and probably some of the basketball players as well. If Caroline wins a grand slam this year, she might move up as well.
(Personally I'm missing Ryan Lochte on the list (although he will certainly make an appearance next year!))

The Thorpedo to return to the pool?
Yesterday I heardthis little tidbit on the news about Ian Thorpe reportedly returning to pro swimming. Crazy. How excited am I?
The swimming geek in me is going to have a field day by London 2012 , I mean I already love the Olympics, and swimming, and I also love the Thorpedo (and Phelpsie, and Lochte...). Even though, as if right now, Thorpedo is claiming that he will only be trying out for the relays, I foresee an awesome relay matchup in the 4x200 in London. And I have total confidence that Thorpe will have a great, wonderous comeback. These people don't mess around, and they don't do things halfway. I have a feeling we will probably end up seeing him in an individual event as well. Either way, definately something to watch!

on life-changing changes in life
Even though I am pretty happy with my life in general (ok, more than pretty happy) there are moments when I feel like my life is still kind of standing still. Most people probably have periods of their life where they feel bored, or feel like they are in a 'waiting-for-something-to-happen-phase." That's exactly where I feel I am. Even though I will be the first to admit how much I love the student lifestyle, I sometimes feel bored... I feel like I should be further in my life. Have a job, travel exciting places, change the world, become an adult.
This weekend, my BFFFF Erin (and her wonderful boyfriend) became homeowners. They now both have full-time big-kid jobs, they got a dog together, and own a home. Oh, and she bought a brand new car. She is officially an adult.
Also this weekend, my (Biffer) Jess told me about the list she just recieved with the locations where she might be stationed very soon. Within the next few months, she will graduate from Intel school and officially be stationed as part of US Air Force. (She falls within the category of 'changing the world'). I hope she already knows how proud I am of her.
So, my friends are moving on with their lives and becoming adults. It's natural at our age (not teenagers yet young enough to still need to get partying out of our system) for people to be scattering all over the place, trying new things, all that jazz. I'm guilty of it too for leaving 'home' to go to grad school. But however good change may be, it is almost never fun nor easy while it is happening.
There's no intelligent conclusion to this post, because I think most people know what I'm talking about. It is difficult to put into words how I can simultaneously be happy with my own life, yet jealous of others lives. Change is natural, people come into your life to affect it in different ways, people change, and thankfully, a few precious things never change.

If you know me, you know that I love the Olympics. Mainly my love is focused on the summer Olympics, but the winter olympics can me a little bit excited as well. So anyway, long story short: Denmark hardly ever has any medal chances at the winter Olympics, EXCEPT in curling. The other day I was watching the men's team play a game against Norway, and the only thing I could focus on were the ridiculous pants the Norwegians were wearing. Seriously? My favorite part is how the rest of the world took notice too.
Speaking of the olympics, how awesomely badass is Shaun White and his Double McTwist? Now, I'm a snowboarder, just not one of the very adventurous ones. It's an accomplishment for me to not fall when I do the little jumps on the side of the slopes. Or, I'll stop kidding myself, it's a pretty big accomplishment to NOT fall when getting of the lift. Shaun White is just Awesome yo.
By the way, I do realize how bipolar this post is.

Random news
Jake Gyllenhaal and Toby Maguire are Brothers?
This is the Hollywood remake of a Danish movie. Although remakes aren't always great, this one has a great cast (Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal (swoon), Toby Maguire), and it looks really intense. I'm definately going to be seeing it (Although I may wait for the DVD version. I'm cheap)
Chicago is suddenly interested in Denmark... and I think I know why. Have you ever heard of a little event known as The Olympic Games? Chicago is up for hosting the games in 2016 and these days all sorts of US and Chicago 'celebrities' are in Copenhagen lobbying for Chicago.
Germans stink in bed... literally. Where does your country rank?
I love avacados and now I have a good excuse to keep eating them in large quantities.
